To the MOON!

© 2010 Russ Cox/Smiling Otis Studio

I have been developing some new promo pieces and this is the latest concept. I like the idea of kids using their imagination and playing outdoors. It brings back memories of my childhood. The final art has been started and I hope to post it my next time around. All feedback is greatly welcomed.

  1. Love this Russ ... so much to see. I especially love the cat hanging off the branch. So are you do this in illustrator as a final?

  2. I feel for our children for today because of dangers and unforseen fears they are not free to play like we did in our day . A lot of childrens' freedom is controlled due to fear .What does this do?
:to their creativity, spontaneity and imagination and ability to learn? ..Sad for them!! :o((

  3. Thanks WB! Yes, I plan on doing this in Illustrator but I am going to tone down the brightness of the colors. Make them look more like the 50's style books. I think that might help warm it up and be less commercial looking. If I have time before the conference, I may do this one and a couple of others traditionally. It might be fun to see the differences.

  7. This is a super duper sketch. Your line work is really fantastic. The image is full of kinetic energy and something is bound to explode (in a good way.) And I love the perspective.

I think you have an opportunity to experiment with simpler compositions. The buzz word is "high concept." If you can study it for two seconds and grasp the emotion or the intention of the work, then you've got a high concept piece. It's what editors and publishers are looking for on the writing side, and I imagine they probably appreciate it on the illustration side as well.

I would love to see you try something with the same great style you have but a simple composition with one main point of tension or focus. Just my two cents - either way I think you're awesome.

  8. Thanks Fred for the feedback. I have been experimenting a bit with the final art on this piece. Lots of textures and a more muted pallet. I have some other pieces that are less complex in the composition so I understand what you are you saying.
